Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen

History: The Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen is not a newcomer to its native France, recently taken the USA by storm. One famous proud owner is Mary Tyler Moore.

but it has

The Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen, or the PBGV for short, is a smaller version of the Grand Basset Griffon Vendeen and was first considered a separate breed in the 1700s. It originated in the Vendeen district of France and is the descendant of the St. Hubert Hound, the Bracco Italiano, and the Griffon Nivernais. These breeds were combined to produce a breed called the Grand Griffon Vendeen, and the Basset derivation came about either from a mutation or from selective breeding for shorter legs. These dogs were used for hunting a variety of game and could work individually or in groups.

Physical characteristics:

Height: 13 - 15 in (33 - 38 cm) at the shoulder. Weight: 25 - 35 lb (11 - 16 kg). The Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen has the typical Basset appearance: short legs, long body, and long ears. However, they have straighter legs than most Bassets, and the length of the ears is not quite so exaggerated. The placement of the ears adds the illusion of length; they are attached below the level of the eye. The Griffon part of their heritage provides them with a medium-length coat that is hard and rough to touch. The hair on the face is slightly longer, forming distinguished eyebrows, moustaches and beard. Their tail tapers along its length and has a small amount of fringing on the underside.

Behavior:

This charming little dog has the ability to directly appeal to the heart of its owner. This smaller version of the Grand Griffon Vendeen still retains much of the nobility of its larger "cousin" but is far more manageable. The Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen is still capable of tracking small game, but is most usually kept as a companion animal.
