Siberian Husky

Siberian Husky

The Siberian Husky, the smallest of the Husky breeds, is not a barker but prefers to communicate via soft talking sounds or howling.

History:

The Siberian is an old, pure breed that was developed in Siberia by the Chukchi people. Sleds were their only means of transportation and so they created a breed that had strength combined with speed and stamina. The first Siberians to come to worldwide attention were competitors in the 1909 long distance all-Alaska sweepstakes races. The other competitors recognized their outstanding qualities, and the Siberian soon became a popular sled dog. Today the Siberian is not only a competent sled dog, but is a popular companion and show dog as well.

Physical characteristics:

The Siberian is not a large dog. Height: 20 - 24 in (51 - 60 cm). Weight: 35 - 60 lb (16 -27 kg). The Siberian Husky is a well-built, almost wolf-like dog with no exaggerations or excesses. The head is domed and has almond-shaped eyes and medium-sized triangular, upright ears. The body has a deep chest and strong back, and the legs are powerful without being heavy. It has a dense undercoat, with a straight soft outercoat that is medium-length and forms a plume on the curled tail. Siberians come in a range of colors including black, gray, red, sable and agouti, all with or without white, as well as pure white.

Behavior:

The Siberian Husky is well-known for its gentle nature and is the most docile of all the sled dogs. Usually it gets along well with other dogs, but it is not wise to keep closely matched females together. The Husky is an intelligent dog and is best trained with affection and praise.

Huskies require a firm hand if they are to be worked, but if they get scared they can become aggressive. These cold-climate dogs require a lot of exercise to keep them in top form, but care must be taken not to overheat them in hot conditions. Huskies do not normally bark very much but are prone to howling. Their thick coat does not require a lot of attention, except when they are shedding.
